Electrical wire sizes in mm, I would like to state from the onset that my discussion is limited or confined to electrical wires used in house wiring. For this reason, I will talk about common circuits used in electrical house wiring.
In domestic or residential premises, most of the load is lighting and sockets outlets. This does not mean that you will find lighting and sockets outlets only.
In modern homes, you will find air conditioners, electric geysers for hot water and electric cookers. Therefore, the electric wire sizes discussion is based on the circuits. Electrical wire sizes in mm(millimetres)can either mean the diameter of the wires or the cross-section area of the wires.
Allow me to say that throughout this talk, I will be referring to the cross-section area of the wires in millimetres.
Electrical wire size for lighting.
In electrical wires for lighting, it must click in your mind that I am talking about wires that you run in a home, to circulate electric current through all the lighting fixtures in the home. Light fixtures like Led downlights, wall sconce, Bathroom lighting, chandeliers and led strip lights.
The recommended wire size for lighting circuits in residential premises is 1.5mm2 . Let it be known to you that this does not include the insulation sheath. This is the cross-section area of the copper component of the electrical wires.
Wire size for sockets outlets.
Socket outlets, this is a place where you plug in your Television set, Laptop and many other home appliances. For these gadgets and appliances to work properly, you must use the correct cable size.
Why should you use the correct cable size? You do this to protect the home appliances from being damaged and protect people from electric shocks.2.5mm2.Is the recommended cable size for power socket outlets.
I must mention here that at times, you can power domestic airconditioners using 2.5mm2. cable size.
Water heater circuits cable size.
You use a 4mm2 cable for all your water heater(geyser). The reason you use a 4mm squared cable is to allow the current drawn by the water heater or geyser to pass through with less electric resistance. The more current an appliance draws from the supply, the larger the cross-section area of the electrical wire size used.
Airconditioning circuits, here you use either 2.5mm and 4mm cable. the size of the air conditioner is what determines the electrical wire to use. Not only the size but also the distance from the supply to the location of the air conditioner. What do I mean? You might have an air conditioner that can work well with a 2.5mm cable. Then you notice that is very far from the distribution board.
You can use a 4mm cable to compensate for the voltage drop.
In cooker circuits, you use 6mm2 cables. This is also dependant on the power consumption of the cooker unit. At times you might find that a 6mm2 cable is not sufficient to supply the needed current. What do you do? In this case, you can use a 10mm2 cable.
What is the difference between 1.5 mm2 and 2.5 mm2 cable?
The major difference is that 1.5mm2 cable is mainly used in lighting while 2.5mm2 cable is used for socket outlets .1.5mm2 can cary up to 10 Amperes current while a 2.5mm2 cable can cary up to 25 amperes of current.
